Chapter 5
By the time Buffy made her way back to Spike, his nose had stopped bleeding. They worked in silence, cleaning the blood that had begun to dry on his face and neck. Spike took the time to examine Buffys concerned face. He had forgotten how pretty she was. Her long blond hair completely strait parted on the side, hung loose around her shoulders. He mouth set in a determined grimace as her dark green eyes showed uneasiness. ‘At what?’ he wondered, ‘My nose? Everything?’
Buffy tried ignoring the way Spike seemed to focus on her face. She just wanted to get this over and get on with her life. With the baby. As she finished scrubbing the blood from his cheek she blurted “So I assume you want to talk.” Ducking her face she picked up the ice pack and handed it to Spike.
“Thanks pet but I don’t think I will need it. My nose hasn’t swelled too much. But maybe we can go somewhere else I don’t fancy getting slugged again.” He said while thinking ‘Of course I want to talk is this bit crazy?’
“Ok let me grab my bag.” Spike tried not to watch her walk back into the house. By the time she returned, Spike had moved the car into her driveway. She quickly got in the car. “So where too?” She said as she tugged the seat belt on.
“Have you eaten this morning? Cause I am starved.”
“I am pregnant I’m always hungry.” She said blushing.
They drove the rest of the way to the restaurant in silence. The silence continued as they sat down and began looking at the menus. Once they ordered Spike knew he had o say something. Something to open the conversation in way to make her understand he wasn’t angry. He needed to know if it was true. If it was his. What she wanted. Spike took a drink of water and cleared his throat.
“So..”
“I know this is a shock..I know it was for me. I didn’t want this to happen. ” Buffy paused, trying to find the words. “I will be fine. I didn’t even really want you to know. I told Xander and he.. well he kinda lost it. I’ll understand if you don’t want to have anything to do with it…”
Spike didn’t listen to her rambles. He was focused on one sentence. “You weren’t going to tell me?”
Buffy blushed ashamed. “I don’t even know you. I mean one date three months ago. You didn’t even call.” Spike began to interrupt her but she continued. “That’s ok. I don’t really date much anyway. I understand. But this is my reasonability.” She chucked as she continued. “I bet you think it isn’t even yours. I would to if I was in your place. But.” Buffy locked her eyes to his. “That was my first and so far only time.” Buffy suddenly felt sick. “Excuse me.” She jumped up and ran from the table one hand covering her mouth.
Spike fought the urge to follow her. Stunned by finding out he had taken her virginity, pride of being the first who had been allowed inside her, he sat trying to remember that night. “Damn it. I wasn’t that drunk.’ He remembered the wine and kissing her. Slowly pushing off her unbuttoned top. He remembered her hesitation as he began to pull the hem of her skirt up and her panties down. That was when he asked if it was all right. Spike knew from past experience with Dru if she had showed any signs of not wanting to he would have stopped. The feel of her under him had amazed him, all that passion. It had never been that way with Dru. Spike knew that his first time inside the beautiful young woman was the first time he had truly made love. Tears came to his dark blue eyes as he remembered one more detail. She had tensed and cried out when he entered her. Spike knew then she was telling the truth. He was the father of Buffys baby.
As Buffy approached the table she hearted his whispered “I am going to be a father.” Suddenly nervous, “I am not feeling well I think I need to go home.”
“But what about breakfast?”
“Can we get it to go?”
“Of course love, are you ok?” Spike tried to hide the fear in his eyes.
“I will be its just the smells in here and all the stress of a conversation I never wanted to have in the first place. I think I just need to go home and take a nap. I didn’t sleep well last night.”
“Give me one moment and I’ll tell the waiter. Do you wanna wait for me outside?” Buffy nodded and headed outside while Spike paid for the food and grabbed two to-go boxes. Buffy had made it to the car and was waiting outside the passenger side. Spike cursed himself “Sorry, love I should have given you the keys.”
“That’s ok I needed the fresh air.”
They began heading back to her house. They had only traveled a few miles when the smell of fried eggs and bacon began to make Buffy nauseous.
“Pull over.” She said, “Please pull over now!”
Spike obeyed quickly. Before the car was even stopped completely Buffy had the door open and the sound of her retching cause his stomach to turn.
“You ok love?” He asked as he took off his seat belt and began to unbuckle hers. “Buffy?” Concern laced through his voice.
“Yea I think we need to ditch the boxes.”
“No problem I don’t think I could eat now anyway.” His hand began tracing a lazy circle pattern on her back. “Can I get you anything?”
“Yeah, grab my bag, please”
Spike leaned over the seat and tugged on the strap of her bag. Buffy pulled her body straight in the seat and began rummaging through the bag. Finally finding her travel mouthwash she opened the cap and began gargling the minty liquid then spit it out on the ground outside the car. She looked over to find Spike grinning at her preparedness.
“Ok buster show’s over. Take me home.” She commanded a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
“Yes, ma’am.” He gave her a mock salute before heading back to her house.
As Revello drive neared Spike found himself more and more apprehensive about asking the one question he knew he needed to ask. He pulled into her driveway and turned off the car.
“Buffy, Do you want this baby?” Spike began to allow his nerves to cause him to ramble “Cause if you don’t then I can pay for a … to get rid…”
Anger flashed through Buffys eyes and was suddenly out of the car.
“You bastard! How could you even think? If that’s what I wanted I could have had it taken care of before anyone knew!” She stomped to the house and grabbed her key from the bag. “Don’t worry you don’t have to be a father. Women raise babies every day on their own. And I don’t think you would make a good father anyway, so I tell you what. Just forget you even have a child! Cause I never want to see you again.”
Suddenly the door was open and she disappeared.
“Bloody Hell woman!” Spike screamed at the door.
